The premiere of Fiat 127 took place on April 17, 1971. This model is considered a predecessor of B-class hatchbacks. In spite of its compact measures (3.59 m to 1.52 m), neither a driver nor a passenger felt the lack of space, for about 80 percent of the car was meant for the cabin and trunk (365 litres). A small 47-litre-engine could accelerate the car up to 135 km/h. The speed of 100 km/h was gained by a Fiat 127 in 19 seconds. A front-wheel-drive car was quite stable and precise in control while driven. And customers were absolutely excited. In 1972 Fiat 127 was awarded as «The automobile of the year» and by 1974 there were already one million cars produced. There were two restyled versions of the model built in 1977 and 1981. The production stopped in Italy in 1983. The total number of sold Fiat 127s exceeded 4.5 million copies.
