Gaston Plante was born

Photo: Wikipedia

On April 22, 1834, a French physicist, inventor of the lead acid battery, Gaston Plante, was born. The first battery he created in 1859 was still very imperfect, but the principle of operation has survived to the present day. The Plante battery consisted of two identical lead plates wound around a wooden cylinder. They were separated from each other by a fabric gasket. Then he pulled the resulting bundle together with rubber rings and put it in a tank with acidified water. A significant drawback of the Plante battery was its small capacity — it discharged too quickly. And the dimensions of such a battery, by modern standards, were simply unbelievable — it occupied an area of ??10 m?.
