GAZ-51 production start

On June 30, 1946, the first GAZ-51 trucks rolled off the assembly line. They replaced the technically obsolete GAZ-AA (folk nickname «polutorka» — editor’s note). The new model had a platform extended by 0.5 meters, increased loading capacity by 1 ton, 30% lower gas mileage with a more powerful engine (3.5 liter capacity, 70 hp), improved brakes, increased capacity fuel tank (to 105 liters), more solid frame, lower ground pressure. The gearbox and rear axle remained the same. In 1947, the designers of the group who developed the GAZ-51 were awarded the Stalin Prize. In 1948, the production of the GAZ-63, an all-wheel drive version of the GAZ-51, began.
