Andrea Vesco: after this fifth success, there is a lot more awareness even just for having managed to win the race

In the history of the «Mille Miglia» there were only two people who managed to win the race three times in a row – Clemente Biondetti (1947 -1949) and Giuliano Cane (1998-2000). This year, Andrea Vesco has been joined him. In 21 years of performance in retro rally , he has climbed to the top step of the podium five times: twice with Andrea Guerini, Fabio Salvinelli and once with his father in 2020. And his worst result in all the years of performance was the 8th place. After the victory, Andrea Vesco told ACN, how his attitude to winning had been changed, and why it was impossible to win the race «in advance».

-You have been leading for four days. When did you realize, that your rivals would not be able to impose a fight on you?

Considering that you can be certain only once you have reached the finish line (see accident at the Alfa Romeo of Aliverti-Valente), I would say that the time trials in Tuscany (from n. 73 to n. 88) were the decisive ones to take a good advantage to manage it in the last leg.

-Which part of the race this year was the most difficult?

-This year, like last year, was tough from start to finish because we had to face a scorching heat that gave neither the crews nor the cars a breather.

-Four years ago, you said that the first victory was the most desirable, because you had been going to it for many years. Has anything changed after the fifth one?

-After this fifth success, compared to the past, there is a lot more awareness even just for having managed to win the race; when I won in 2016 I had already achieved many successes but the most important one was missing, now when I run the 1000 Miglia I certainly have a decidedly less “weight” and I can face it in a more relaxed way.

-At the moment, you are one of the most titled of the current MM drivers. Was there any thought of skipping the season, taking a break?

-At the moment I’m focused on the GP Nuvolari in September, my most important goal of the season like the 1000 Miglia. So I won’t run until the beginning of September and will do a couple of races in preparation in the weeks immediately preceding the race.

-At the finish there was a feeling that Fabio was more pleased with your common victory than you were. Is it so?

-No, we were both very happy with this success, only having two different characters he was in the end a bit more tense and therefore after the last tests in Monza he let himself go, while I knew that the advantage accumulated in the previous 3 stages was enough and that it was enough not to make serious mistakes that in fact we did not make.

-Your father was at the start and at the finish, what did he tell you after the finish?

-He complimented me of course, but we had been in contact throughout the race thanks to a group on Whatsapp created for the occasion.

-Your father said in an interview that it was very important for him that you follow in his footsteps, and he hopes that the Vesco dynasty will continue for a long time. What position do you take in this issue? Is it important for you that twins share your life’s work?

-My father has had a great passion for this sector for over 50 years, a passion that I try to continue in my own way because I consider historic motoring to be a fascinating sector, so much so that even at a professional level we deal fully with historic cars. As for my children, I will let them decide whether or not this will be their path, without forcing.
