Fontanella: one always tends to remember the last good result

There are crews that dream of a place on the Mille Miglia podium, but there are those who, thanks to their experience and hard work, achieve this year after year. The crew of Gianmario Fontanella/Anna Maria Covelli is one of this. Gianmario Fontanella has told about competition, the Italian championship and cooperation with Promotor Classic in an interview with AutoClassicNews.

-You have been on the Mille Miglia podium four times in the last few years. Which of these races was the most challenging for you?

-One always tends to remember the last good result! Certainly, this year was more difficult due to the very high level of many competitors. I had more difficulty managing the mental aspect of the race.

-Since 2023, the race has been held over five days. Are you happy with this format or would you like to return to the four-day format?

— I definitely prefer the 5 days. The fatigue is more spread out, and in the end, we are less tired.

-Do you think the sporting regulations of the race should be changed to allow more crews to compete for the podium?

-I don’t see the reason for it. At the MM, the car is registered and accepted, not the driver. They are selected based on the historical background they have had. This standard should be maintained. If a driver aspires to the podium, they need to try to get that type of car and then hope for the best.

-This season you have competed in three CIRAS rounds and at the Circuito Stradale del Mugello.Which of these races was the most challenging for you?

-I found Campagne & Cascine fun and a bit difficult this year for me. It’s always very challenging.

-Is it important for you to compete in the Italian Championship rounds to maintain your racing form?

-In terms of major events… yes. Given that I am not participating in the Italian championship.

-Last year you started collaborating with Promotor Classic. Tell us more about this.

-Promotor Classic is a well-organized sports structure with a section dedicated to the sporting management of events and a section dedicated to the technical assistance of vehicles. I find this collaboration very convenient and effective.

-Are there any advantages or additional obligations for crews who compete as part of teams?

-The advantages come from an organization that is professionally managed, making things easier and reducing the burdens on the crews.
