April 25, 1901 in the state of New York official car numbers were introduced for the first time in the world. Car owners were required to register themselves and vehicles. The registration procedure cost $1. In the first year 954 numbers were issued. They represented a small plate on which the initials of the owner were indicated. But there were no firm requirements for the signs and each motorist could make them himself or buy a plate from craftsmen and attach it to the car. The fact that these were Americans who introduced first licence plates is disputed by the Germans who claim that their numbers appeared even back in 1899.
