On June 27, 1962, a new Alfa Romeo Guilia TI was shown at the Monza circiut. The abbreviation TI (Turismo Internazionale) first appeared on Guilia. It meant belonging to the top versions with a distinctive sports orientation. The designers of Alfa Romeo managed to combine a family sedan and a sportscar in one vehicle. The new 1.6-liter engine had 92 hp in capacity and accelerated the car to 166 km/h. Although Guilia looked outwardly angular, its body was distinguished by excellent aerodynamics. Its drag coefficient (0.33) was less than that of the Porsche 911 of that time. In addition to sedans, Guilia also produced «spiders», «coupe» and «roadsters». In 1964 a simplified, more affordable version appeared with a 1.3-liter engine producing 78 or 82 hp. In the 1960s, Guilia was a very popular model. In addition to a large number of “civilian” modifications, Gran Turismo class cars and racing cars were created on its basis. In 1970 the lineup was seriously updated. The last «Guilia» rolled off the assembly line in 1978. In automotive history Alfa Romeo Giulia has remained a role model for sports sedan and currently has a high collector’s value.
