On July 4, 1957, Fiat began production of Nuova 500. The car was thought as a development of the concept of the pre-war Fiat 500 “Topolino”, a cheap and practical city car. Design was entrusted to the same specialist — Dante Giacosa. It was he who created the two-seater car with a length of only 2970 mm. The rear-mounted 479 cc twin-cylinder air-cooled engine had 13 horsepowers and accelerated the vehicle to 85 km/h.
The new «500th» has changed the idea of ??a small car and is considered to be one of the first examples of city cars. In Italy, it became a cult car. In Turin, in front of the FIAT Group Directorate, a marble copy of Nuova 500 is installed on a pedestal.
