First-hand Experience: Alfa Romeo 6C Super Sport through the eyes of Giovanni Moceri

In five days in Brescia we are expecting the event about which legends are told, it is spoken about with a breath and its winners row up with two-time Formula-1 champion Alberto Ascari and Sir Stirling Moss who both won the legendary race in the 20th century. But, as in other car races, the victory in Mille Miglia depends on the car. Would Moss have come first in 1955 if his Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR had broken down during the race, and had had to be repaired? Hardly. Someone can say that it does not take only a car to be victorious, but also an experienced co-pilot should be there. And we agree with this argument. Winning «Mille Miglia Storica», as the race is called now after its relaunch in 1977, it is impossible without both of the above. But what does it mean to drive a ninety-year-old car when the struggle is underway for every second, only ones who survived it at least once can tell. So, we could not help taking a chance and asking the 2019 Champion Giovanni Moceri about this. Here is what he had to say:

«This 1928 Alfa Romeo 6c Super Sport is from the Stellantis Heritage collection and is kept at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese. It has a 7-cylinder engine with a 1500 cm3 compressor of displacement with 76 horsepower and a maximum speed of 140 km/h, a

legendary car which led Campari and Ramponi to the victory at the 1928 edition of 1000 Miglia. It is a car that lends itself well to regularity tests as the engine has good torque at the bottom that allows you to adjust the approach to the pressure switch in timed practice with extreme precision. The gearbox is a bit difficult as it requires very precise gear changes and you have to be attentive to certain engine revolutions. The braking system is sufficient to manage the car’s power in the practice sections. The Alfa, initially prepared for the «old» 1000 miles, has excellent versatility for the historical re-enactment of regularity, an excellent compromise in light of the coefficient of 1.80 attributed by the organizer».

Let us remind you that the «most beautiful road race in the world» this year will be held from June 16 to 19. In 2021 Mille Miglia there will be 375 cars that are to take part. Russia will be presented by two duos: Andrei and Pavel Pankovsky on a 1932 Aston Martin Le Mans 1932 and Ivan Gorokh/Boris Mostyrko onboard a 1935 Fiat 508s Balilla Sport Mille Miglia.
